Queensland Synod

King’s College is proudly affiliated with the Uniting Church in Australia and has a strong Christian heritage that continues to shape our community today.

In 1901, the Methodist Conference resolved to send candidates for ministry to Queen’s College in Melbourne. This innovative model — combining theological training within the university collegiate experience — later became the foundation for King’s College. The establishment of The University of Queensland in 1909 further supported this vision.

On 1 March 1912, the Methodist Conference formally decided to establish King’s College. The College officially opened on 14 June 1913 at Kangaroo Point, with students already in residence from March of that year.

For many years, King’s College played a dual role, providing a residential community for university students while also contributing to theological education. This responsibility is now carried forward by Trinity Theological College. The College’s transition to The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus began in 1954, marking a significant new chapter in its history and establishing King’s in its current home.

Today, King’s College remains a Christian-based organisation that warmly welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds. The College does not impose religious obligations on Collegians; instead, it encourages individuals to explore the Christian tradition and develop a faith that is meaningful and personal to them.

With the support of the Uniting Church in Queensland Synod, the College holds special Chapel Services throughout the year. Attendance for resident students and Associate Members is strongly encouraged in the spirit of community, reflection, and shared values.
